Ray Charles (September 23, 1930 – June 10, 2004) was an American musician. Charles was a pioneer in the genre of soul music during the 1950s by fusing rhythm & blues, gospel, and blues styles into his early recordings for Atlantic Records. He also helped racially integrate country and pop music during the 1960s with his crossover success on ABC Records, most notably with his Modern Sounds albums. During his tenure with ABC, Charles became one of the first African-American musicians to be given artistic control by a mainstream record company. Rolling Stone ranked Charles number 10 on their list of "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" in 2004, and voted him number two on their November 2008 list of "100 Greatest Singers of All Time"

Biography Ray Charles Robinson was the son of Aretha Williams, a sharecropper, and Bailey Robinson, a railroad repair man, mechanic and handyman. Aretha Williams was a devout Christian and the family attended the New Shiloh Baptist Church. When Ray was an infant, his family moved from Albany, Georgia, where he was born, to the poor black community of Jellyroll on the western side of Greenville, Florida. In his early years, Charles showed a curiosity for mechanical things and he often watched the neighborhood men working on their cars and farm machinery. His musical curiosity was sparked at Mr. Wiley Pit's Red Wing Cafe when Pit played boogie woogie on an old upright piano. Pit would care for George, Ray's brother, so as to take the burden off Williams. However, George drowned in the Williams' wash tub when he was four years old. Charles started to lose his sight at the age of five. He went completely blind by the age of seven. Though there are sources that suggest his blindness was due to glaucoma, most sources suggest that Ray began to lose his sight from an infection caused by soapy water to his eyes which was left untreated. He attended school at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in St. Augustine from 1937-45, where he developed his musical talent. During this time he performed on WFOY radio in St. Augustine. His father died when he was ten, followed by his mother five years later.   Early career In school, Charles was taught only classical music, but he wanted to play the jazz and blues he heard on the radio.[12] While at school, he became the school's premier musician. On Fridays, the South Campus Literary Society held assemblies where Charles would play piano and sing popular songs. On Halloween and Washington's birthday, the Colored Department of the school had socials where Charles would play. It was here he established "RC Robinson and the Shop Boys" and sang his own arrangement of "Jingle Bell Boogie."[13] He spent his first Christmas at the school, but later the staff pitched in so that Charles could return to Greenville, as he did each summer.   Later years In 1965, Ray Charles was arrested for possession of heroin, a drug to which he had been addicted for nearly 20 years.[8] It was his third arrest for the offense, but he avoided jail time after kicking the habit in a clinic in Los Angeles. He spent a year on parole in 1966, when his single "Crying Time" reached #6 on the charts. During the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Charles's releases were hit-or-miss,[10] with some big hits and critically acclaimed work. His version of "Georgia On My Mind" was proclaimed the state song of Georgia on April 24, 1979, and he performed it on the floor of the state legislature.[10] He also had success with his unique version of "America the Beautiful". In November 1977 he appeared as the host of NBC's Saturday Night Live.[19] In the 1980s a number of other events increased Charles's recognition among young audiences. He made a cameo appearance in the popular 1980 film The Blues Brothers. In 1985, "The Right Time" was featured in the episode "Happy Anniversary" of The Cosby Show on NBC. The next year in 1986, he sang America The Beautiful at Wrestlemania 2. In a Pepsi Cola commercial of the early 1990s, Charles popularized the catchphrase "You Got the Right One, Baby!" and he was featured in the recording of "We Are the World" for USA for Africa. Despite his support of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the 1960s and his support for the American Civil Rights Movement, Charles courted controversy when he toured South Africa in 1981,[10] during an international boycott of the country because of its apartheid policy. In 1989, Charles recorded a cover version of the Japanese band Southern All Stars' song "Itoshi no Ellie" as "Ellie My Love" for a Suntory TV advertisement, reaching #3 on Japan's Oricon chart.[20] Eventually, it sold more than 400,000 copies, and became that year's best-selling single performed by a Western artist for the Japanese music market. [citation needed] Charles also appeared at two Presidential inaugurations in his lifetime. In 1985, he performed for Ronald Reagan's second inauguration, and in 1993 performed for Bill Clinton's first inauguration.[21] In the late 1980s/early 1990s, Charles made appearances on The Super Dave Osbourne Show, where he performed and appeared in a few vignettes where he was somehow driving a car, often as Super Dave's chauffeur. At the height of his newfound fame in the early nineties, Charles did guest vocals for quite a few projects. He also appeared (with Chaka Khan) on long time friend Quincy Jones' hit "I'll Be Good to You" in 1990, from Jones's album Back on the Block. Following Jim Henson's death in 1990, Ray Charles appeared in the one-hour CBS tribute, The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson. He gave a short speech about the deceased, stating that Henson "took a simple song and a piece of felt and turned it into a moment of great power". Charles was referring to the song "It's Not Easy Being Green", which Charles later performed with the rest of the Muppet cast in a tribute to Henson's legacy. [citation needed] During the sixth season of Designing Women, Charles sang "Georgia on My Mind", instead of the song being rendered instrumentally by other musicians as in the previous five seasons. He also appeared in 4 episodes of the popular TV comedy The Nanny in Seasons 4 & 5 (1997 & 1998) as 'Sammy', in one episode singing "My Yiddish Mamma" to December romance and later fiancee of character Gramma Yetta, played by veteran actress Ann Guilbert.   Death He died on June 10, 2004 at 11:35 a.m. of liver cancer at his home in Beverly Hills, California, surrounded by family and friends. He was 73 years old. His body was interred in the Inglewood Park Cemetery. Following the funeral, a BBC spokesman commented: "[i]t did not go unnoticed that Susaye [Susaye Greene, former member of the Raelettes as well as of the Supremes and Wonderlove, and currently a solo artist] was the only Raelette to sing at Ray's funeral." [citation needed] His final album, Genius Loves Company, released two months after his death, consists of duets with various admirers and contemporaries: B.B. King, Van Morrison, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Gladys Knight, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, Elton John, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, and Johnny Mathis. The album won eight Grammy Awards, including five for Ray Charles for Best Pop Vocal Album, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for "Here We Go Again" with Norah Jones, and Best Gospel Performance for "Heaven Help Us All" with Gladys Knight; he also received nods for his duets with Elton John and B.B. King. The album included a version of Harold Arlen's "Over the Rainbow", sung as a duet by Charles and Johnny Mathis, which recording was later played at his memorial service.[22] Two more posthumous albums, Genius & Friends (2005) and Ray Sings, Basie Swings (2006), were released. Genius & Friends consisted of duets recorded from 1997 to 2005 with his choice of artists. Ray Sings, Basie Swings consists of archived vocals of Ray Charles from live mid-1970s performances added to new instrumental tracks specially recorded by the contemporary Count Basie Orchestra and other musicians. Charles's vocals recorded from the concert mixing board were added to new accompaniments to create a "fantasy concert" recording. Gregg Field, who had performed as a drummer with both Charles and Basie, produced the album.   Hall of Fame and other honors Statue in Ray Charles Plaza in Albany, Georgia In 1979, he was one of the first honorees of the Georgia State Music Hall of Fame being recognized for being a musician born in the state.[31] Ray's version of "Georgia On My Mind" was made into the official state song for Georgia.[32] In 1981, he was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was one of the first inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural ceremony in 1986.[33] He received the Kennedy Center Honors in 1986.[34] In 1987, he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1991, he was inducted to the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. In 1993, he was awarded the National Medal of Arts.[35] In 1998 he was awarded the Polar Music Prize together with Ravi Shankar in Stockholm, Sweden. In 2004 he was inducted to the Jazz Hall of Fame, and inducted to the National Black Sports & Entertainment Hall of Fame.[36] The Grammy Awards of 2005 were dedicated to Charles. On December 7, 2007, Ray Charles Plaza was opened in Albany, Georgia, with a revolving, lighted bronze sculpture of Charles seated at a piano. Later that month, on December 26, 2007, Ray Charles was inducted into the Hit Parade Hall of Fame. He was also presented with the George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement, during the 1991 UCLA Spring Sing.   Ray Charles Post Office Building On Tuesday, July 12, 2005, President George Bush signed into law a bill (PL 109-25), sponsored by Congresswoman Diane E. Watson (CA-33rd), designating the U.S. postal facility located at 4960 W. Washington Blvd. in Los Angeles, California, as the Ray Charles Post Office Building. James Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963. He is of German, English and Irish descent. Hetfield's father, Virgil (a truck driver who later left the family) and mother, Cynthia (a light opera singer) were strict adherents to Christian Science, and accordingly, much of James' young life revolved around Christian Science. In accordance with their beliefs, Hetfield's parents strongly disapproved of medicine or any other medical treatment and remained loyal to their faith even as Cynthia was dying from cancer. His mother died in 1979 when James was 16. His father died in 1996, during the Load tour. Musical influences Hetfield was nine years old when he first began piano lessons, after which he took on his brother David's drums and finally, at the age of fourteen, he began to play guitar. He also was in a few bands as a child - one being Leather Charm and another Obsession. Hetfield identifies Aerosmith as having been his main musical influence as a child,[4] and has said that they were the reason why he wanted to play guitar. Metallica (since 1981) In the early days of the band, Metallica experimented with a few different vocals and guitar combinations, essentially creating a setup like that of Diamond Head. (Eventually, they would cover Diamond Head's "Am I Evil?") Some of the options considered included adding another guitar player, having John Roads play lead guitar, as well as asking John Bush from Armored Saint (who later joined Anthrax) to sing for the band. Hetfield stated in a 1989 interview with Spin that the band wanted ex-Misfits' vocalist Glenn Danzig[citation needed] to be Metallica's singer, but it is unclear whether or not Danzig was ever actually approached to join the band. The finalized line-up of the band became Hetfield (rhythm guitar and vocals), Lars Ulrich (drums), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), and Cliff Burton (bass). From 1982 to 1983, Mustaine's alcoholism sparked heated altercations between himself and Hetfield.[5] Mustaine also once poured beer onto Ron McGovney's bass[5] very nearly causing serious damage. Eventually, Hetfield and Ulrich rejected Mustaine due to his alcoholic tendencies[5] and recruited lead guitarist Kirk Hammett from the band Exodus the same day.[6] Mustaine was sent home on a 4-day bus journey, and went on to form the thrash metal band Megadeth. Until the mid-1990s, Hetfield recorded all rhythm tracks and most harmony tracks[citation needed]. Since the recording of Load, Kirk Hammett is recording rhythm guitars as well. James occasionally plays guitar solos, too, such as "Nothing Else Matters", "My Friend of Misery" the outro solo on "The Outlaw Torn", the second solo on "To Live Is to Die", the second solo on "Orion", the first solo on "Suicide and Redemption", and the first interlude solo on "Master of Puppets" and the introduction harmonic solo in "The Day That Never Comes". He also writes the majority of the guitar harmonies, as well as writing the lyrics, vocal melodies, and co-arranging the songs with Ulrich. Hetfield has been involved in many onstage accidents, the most famous one being an incident with pyrotechnics at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. While on the GN'R-Metallica Stadium Tour on August 8, 1992, he accidentally stepped into the path of one of the chemical flames that had been rigged to shoot from the lip of the stage during the song "Fade to Black". Hetfield's guitar protected him from the full force of the blast; however, the fire engulfed his left side, burning his hand, arm, eyebrows, face and hair. He suffered second and third-degree burns, but was back on stage 17 days later, although his guitar duties were delegated to former guitar tech and Metal Church guitarist John Marshall for four weeks while he made a full recovery. Hetfield has also broken his arm several times while skateboarding, which prevented him from playing guitar on stage, and subsequently caused Hetfield's management company Q Prime to add a clause in James' contract forbidding him to ride a skateboard during a Metallica tour.[8] During a concert on tour for the Black Album, James experienced complications with his vocals after performing a cover of the Anti-Nowhere League's "So What", forcing him to take vocal lessons for the first time. James did basic warm-up exercises to piano keys with his vocal coach who also gave him a cassette tape of the piano warm-up for future use. Hetfield still uses the same cassette he was given in the early nineties to this day before any show or any recording Metallica does. James talks about his vocal training endeavours in the Metallica documentary film, Some Kind of Monster produced & directed by Joe Berlinger & Bruce Sinofsky. During the recording of the St. Anger album (2002–2003), Hetfield went into rehab to address his alcohol addiction. Hetfield rejoined the band after two months in rehab and seven months recovering with his family. He is now clean and sober and is determined to remain so, all of which is in Some Kind of Monster. Some Kind of Monster also shows the making of the St. Anger album and documents the various conflicts and issues the band were facing at the time including the departure of Metallica's bassist, Jason Newsted, alcoholism, family commitments, and the future of the band with many in the rock press questioning whether the band would even still be together to see the completion of the St. Anger album. Hetfield and Metallica addressed their need for a new bassist by recruiting Robert Trujillo. The new lineup has continued to make music and tour worldwide. Metallica's newest album, Death Magnetic, was released on September 12, 2008. Like St. Anger and every album of original material released by Metallica since 1991's Black Album, Death Magnetic went #1 on the Billboard charts in over 30 countries during its first week of release. On April 4, 2009, James along with remaining Metallica members Lars, Kirk, Robert, Jason, as well as the late Cliff Burton were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.[11] In an interview after their nomination, Hetfield commented that everyone who had appeared on an album with the band would be inducted. This excluded original guitarist Dave Mustaine and original bassist Ron McGovney, as both had appeared only on the band's early demo tapes. Hetfield was ranked 24th in the Hit Parader's Top Metal Vocalist of All Time.   Personal life When he is not writing, singing or playing, Hetfield engages in a variety of outdoor activities including hunting, skateboarding, snowboarding, water and jet-skiing; sketching, working in his garage customizing cars and motorcycles, watching his favorite football team the Oakland Raiders, and going to hot-rod shows. He also collects vintage guitars—particularly those from 1963—and enjoys working on classic automobiles. Among his favorites are a '74 Chevy Nova, which he helped restore, and "The Beast", an all-terrain four wheel drive Blazer. He put his 1968 Chevrolet Camaro up for sale on eBay, with the proceeds going to a Music for Schools program[14]. The car was used in the video for "I Disappear" and was given to him as a gift upon the video's completion. Years later, James donated the car to the Hard Rock Cafe which is featured in the movie Hard Rock Treasures. Hetfield has several tattoos, including one which shows flames encasing four cards, - ace (1), 9, 6 and 3 - representing the year of his birth, and the words "Carpe Diem" ("seize the day", also part of the title of the track "Carpe Diem Baby" off ReLoad). The flames from the tattoo are in reference to the pyrotechnic accident from which he suffered in 1992. He has also tattooed an 'M' on his right hand which stands for Metallica and 'F' on his left hand which stands for "Francesca". Aside from these pursuits, Hetfield says he is often happiest spending time with his wife Francesca and their three children: Cali (June 13, 1998), Castor (May 18, 2000), and Marcella (January 17, 2002). Hetfield married his wife Francesca Tomasi on August 17, 1997. During an interview on NPR's Fresh Air, Hetfield stated that his wife had helped him to mature and learn to deal with his anger issues more constructively, explaining that after they met, his destructive tendencies embarrassed both of them. Joshua Winslow "Josh" Groban (born February 27, 1981) is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, percussionist, actor, comedian, and producer who has sold close to 20 million albums in the United States. He is known for his unique vocal quality and classically inspired pop style. Each of his four solo albums has been certified at least multi-platinum in the United States. Groban, who has mentioned having a photographic memory for music, uses his encyclopedic knowledge of sound to inform his work with diverse fusion elements

Groban was born in Los Angeles to a school teacher mother and a businessman father. His father is of Russian Jewish descent; his Norwegian American mother's grandparents were from the eastern Norwegian district of Toten. Groban was raised an Episcopalian.[citation needed] Chris, his younger brother by four years, shares a birthday with him. Groban debuted as a singer in seventh grade. He attended Bridges Academy, where he was permitted to take normal classes from 9 AM to 1 PM, and attend theater classes in the afternoon. Groban went on to attend the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts as a theatre major, and graduated in 1999. He also attended the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan, majoring in music theatre, and began taking vocal lessons. He was admitted to Carnegie Mellon University, intending to study drama, but he left after four months into his first semester. In late 1998, the 17-year-old Groban was introduced by his vocal coach to Grammy-winning producer/arranger David Foster. Groban worked for David Foster as a rehearsal singer on a series of high-profile events, including the 1999 Grammy Awards where — as a stand-in for Andrea Bocelli — he rehearsed Foster's "The Prayer" with Céline Dion, and the January 1999 inauguration of Gray Davis as Governor of California. Groban was offered a recording contract at Warner Bros. Records through Foster's 143 Records imprint. Foster said: "I love his natural ability in the pop and rock arena, but I love his sense of classics even more. He's a true musical force to be reckoned with." Under Foster's influence, Groban's first album focused more on classics such as "Gira Con Me" and "Alla Luce Del Sole." Groban performed "There For Me" with Sarah Brightman on her 2000–01 La Luna World Tour, and was featured on her "La Luna" concert DVD. He recorded "For Always" with Lara Fabian on the movie soundtrack to A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (2001). The singer's self-titled debut album Josh Groban was released on November 20, 2001. Over the next year, it went from gold to double-platinum. On February 24, 2002, Groban performed "The Prayer" with Charlotte Church at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and by November, he had his own PBS special, Josh Groban In Concert (2002). Various music critics have described Groban's voice in different ways, with some referring to him as a tenor and others as a baritone. In performance, Groban's music goes as low as G 2 (as in the song "To Where You Are") and extends up to at least B♭4 i.e. the first B♭ above middle C (as heard in "You Raise Me Up"). This places his voice lower than the tenor range on the low end, and just short of Tenor C, and therefore is a baritone with a comfortable high tessitura. Benyamin Sueb (lahir di Kemayoran, Jakarta, 5 Maret 1939 – meninggal 5 September 1995 pada umur 56 tahun) adalah pemeran, pelawak, sutradara dan penyanyi Indonesia. Benyamin menghasilkan lebih dari 75 album musik dan 53 judul film.

Kesuksesan dalam dunia musik diawali dengan bergabungnya Benyamin dengan satu grup Naga Mustika. Grup yang berdomisili di sekitar Cengkareng inilah yang kemudian mengantarkan nama Benyamin sebagai salah satu penyanyi terkenal di Indonesia. Selain Benyamin, kelompok musik ini juga merekrut Ida Royani untuk berduet dengan Benyamin. Dalam perkembangannya, duet Benyamin dan Ida Royani menjadi duet penyanyi paling popular pada zamannya di Indonesia. Bahkan lagu-lagu yang mereka bawakan menjadi tenar dan meraih sukses besar. Sampai-sampai Lilis Suryani salah satu penyanyi yang terkenal saat itu tersaingi. Setelah Ida Royani hijrah ke Malaysia tahun 1972, Bang Ben mencari pasangan duetnya. Ia menggaet Inneke Koesoemawati dan berhasil merilis beberapa album, di antaranya "Nenamu" dengan tembang andalan seperti Djanda Kembang, Semut Djepang, Sekretaris, Penganten Baru dan Pelajan Toko. Lewat popularitas di dunia musik, Benyamin mendapatkan kesempatan untuk main film. Kesempatan itu tidak disia-siakan. Beberapa filmnya, seperti Banteng Betawi (1971), Biang Kerok (1972), Intan Berduri serta Si Doel Anak Betawi (1976) yang disutradari Syumanjaya, semakin mengangkat ketenarannya. Dalam Intan Berduri, Benyamin mendapatkan piala Citra sebagai Pemeran Utama Terbaik. Pada akhir hayatnya, Benyamin juga masih bersentuhan dengan dunia panggung hiburan. Selain main sinetron/film televisi (Mat Beken dan Si Doel Anak Sekolahan) ia masih merilis album terakhirnya dengan grup Rock Al-Haj bersama Keenan Nasution. Lagu seperti Biang Kerok serta Dingin-dingin menjadi andalan album tersebut. Kontribusi terhadap gambang kromong Dalam dunia musik, Bang Ben (begitu ia kerap disapa) adalah seorang seniman yang berjasa dalam mengembangkan seni tradisional Betawi, khususnya kesenian Gambang Kromong. Lewat kesenian itu pula nama Benyamin semakin popular. Tahun 1960, presiden pertama Indonesia, Soekarno, melarang diputarnya lagu-lagu asing di Indonesia. Pelarangan tersebut ternyata tidak menghambat karier musik Benyamin, malahan kebalikannya. Dengan kecerdikannya, Bang Ben menyuguhkan musik Gambang Kromong yang dipadu dengan unsur modern. Meninggal dunia Benyamin yang telah empat belas kali menunaikan ibadah haji ini meninggal dunia setelah koma beberapa hari seusai main sepak bola pada tanggal 5 September 1995, akibat serangan jantung. Benyamin dimakamkan di TPU Karet Bivak, Jakarta. Rush adalah kelompok musik progressive rock asal Kanada yang beranggotakan tiga orang. Mereka telah berkarier selama lebih dari 30 tahun dan merilis tujuhbelas album studio dan berbagai rekaman konser dan kompilasi lainnya. Didirikan di tahun 1968 di Toronto oleh Alex Lifeson (gitar), Geddy Lee (vokal, bass, keyboards) dan John Rutsey (drums), Rush telah mengalami pergantian personel hanya satu kali ketika Rutsey keluar setelah album pertama dan digantikan oleh Neil Peart. Lee dan Lifeson biasanya menulis musik dan Peart liriknya, walaupun selalu ada kekecualian dari waktu ke waktu. Semua anggota Rush dikenal sebagai musisi handal dan komposisi mereka kadang cukup rumit dengan irama yang tidak konvensional seperti 7/8 atau sinkopasi, juga solo gitar dan lirik bertemakan serius.
